The Great Refuge Tree

The Refuge Tree of New Yungdrung Bon has seven branches which represent the Seven Refuges. The roots of the Refuge Tree grow from the Great Symbol of the Eternal Bon.

The Seven Refuges:

1. The Universal Teacher

2. The True Dharma

3. The Heavenly Sangha

4. The Earthly Sangha

5. The Divine Teachings

6. The Previous Teachers

7. The World Teacher

The Refuge Tree can be an image within one's mind or a physical representation such as a thangka or other such phsycial object. Bonpo prostrate before the Refuge Tree in an effort to remove their ego, to put their own personal desires aside, and to cultivate purity and true concentration in the practice of the blessed traditions.

In addition to the Refuge Tree representing the Seven Refuges, it also represents that stability of the practioner and his or her faith, as well as the entire Sangha, both the heavenly and the earthly.

By prostrating before the Refuge Tree on a regular basis, removing one's ego and selfish desires, a person is able to walk in pristine clarity in the ancient and blessed Bon (Dharma).
